The Butterfly Factory
A specially cultivated part of the garden designed to attract butterflies and allow them to live and reproduce in a welcoming environment, a succession of particular spaces dedicated to different life stages: The Winter Garden, the Nursery, the Pastures. In the garden they can lay their eggs and grow among the cabbages and apple trees, under the branches of the plum and strawberry trees, in a paradise of scents and colors. Hawthorn and honeysuckle create a mantle of leaves and flowers that provide hiding places and places for eggs. Lavender and rosemary fill the air with their intoxicating scent, inviting butterflies to roost and refresh. Buddleja, with its clusters of sweet flowers, is a veritable feast for butterflies, attracting them with its promise of abundant nectar. And while butterflies flutter among the flowers, caterpillars take refuge among the leaves of cabbage and wild carrot, growing in the protective warmth of the garden. To ensure that butterflies and insects always have a valuable resource, I place containers of fresh water in strategic areas of the garden. In summer these pools of water are an oasis of refreshment for all the creatures that inhabit the garden.
“The secret is not to take care of the butterflies, but to take care of the garden so that the butterflies come to you.” (Màrio Quintana)
The Vision
With The Butterfly Factory I have embarked on a journey that straddles the line between scientific experiment and wonder. This choice is but a part of the project I have dedicated to the preservation of pollinators and biodiversity, but also a dedication to the world of beauty and fantasy that these flying creatures represent: a realm of cheerfulness and joy with a deeper message that reminds us of the fragility and resilience of nature itself.
